925 Pedersen, Hans Willy (Willy)

Date Range:1929 - ct

Description

Willy Pedersen was born in Denmark on 28 April 1929 and emigrated to Australia in 1960. He lived in Melbourne and Townsville before moving to Darwin in 1968 where he worked as an aircraft mechanic. Willy became interested in the work of Thomas Baines (artist-explorer of Australian and southern Africa) who accompanied Augustus Gregory on the North Australian Expedition in 18551857. Willy, sometimes accompanied by Ken McManus, explored the same country as Gregory and documented the same sites. His research included original sources such as Baines journal and sketches at the Mitchell Library (where he was the first person to request the material), and writing to collecting institutions in England. Willy Pedersen and his family left Darwin in 2007 to settle in Canberra.
